I like this Richard Kern shoot for Vice. It kind of appeals to my adolescent tendency towards pigeonholing and stereotypes. Also what teenager doesn't constantly want to reinvent themselves? That's probably been the most consisent feature of my teenage years.

By the way the adolescent theme was an accident but a happy one since today is my last day of being a teenager. Tomorrow I turn 20. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I just realised it looks like I'm crying but I'm not!!!

The last post I did was number 300 on our total posts count. In truth it's a bit tragic because I doubt this blog will go much further. Sorry readers, love you guys (both of you). I have to make another one for uni and neither of us really have the kiddie fascination that is needed to maintain a blog that noone looks at. I don't know what your intentions are Katy.
I feel completely out of wack today through having the worst weekend ever. Friday was fun (the type of fun you make out of a non fun situation) but Saturday was just shiiiiiit. Couldn't milk the tiniest drop of something good out of it. The party host was amazing, I love her (she kept saying I was lovely which I don't think anyone has ever chosen to describe me as), but I got such bad vibes from everyone else that it's stretched over two whole days of my life.
Someone at the party said I have nice hands and later asked me to go home with him and I think I'm still cringing.
There was also an incident with my cousin and her boyfriend and everyone in my house was drunk and screaming at eachother and it was horrible.
I had a dream last night that Jay Leno came to my school and I tried to seduce him (it worked). Kinda fancy Jay Leno now.

I'm missing uni today because I have 3 horrible disgusting spots by my mouth. That's not the real reason I'm staying at home but it's what I sort of assigned to be the Reason I Could Say rather than having to explain that I just don't want to go. I don't know why cos I know uni will cheer me up.
I am going to watch Observe & Report to inject some Seth Rogen into my morning.
I hope you enjoyed some insight into my day. I am usually a lot happier and more positive but noone ever writes about feeling content, which is sad.

After procuring some free tote bags at the freshers' fair, I decided to finally use my Wilko t-shirt transfers that were otherwise getting somewhat dusty. I kind of regret putting it on the blue bag because that stark contrast between a very cold blue and white picture seems sort of shit to me. But it was an experiment so no harm done.

6 things that make me want to kill myself

Loving my new course at uni has turned weektime into joy and weekends into a sort of journey of anxiety and bad experiences. I’ve collected some things** over time that break me down to crippling frustration, so much so that I have nearly written exasperated facebook statuses about them. Yeah, pretty extreme. So far I have collected 6 things that make me want to shoot myself. In the order that I thought of them:

Talking to guys in bars

I don’t tend to talk to guys unless they approach me, and 99% of the time if a guy approaches you in a bar it’s not because he thinks you might be an interesting person. The result is a depressing conversation in which he assesses how easy it will be to take you home and then cringes at a weird word you use and wants to leave. One guy I spoke to, wearing a deep v-neck with some wispy chest hair poking out, just said “sex?” to me. That’s hilarious. I get it, you want sex and don't care about anything else. So genius. It’s really fun not existing in someone’s reality for anything more than the fact I have a vagina and a face.

People bitching about things they know nothing about

Some examples include feminism (bunch of dykes), fashion (shallow and talentless consumerism), drugs (evil things taken by evil people) and art (you could put shit on a plate and call it art these days). Well it goes on forever depending on your experience. I’m sure I’ve done it too because I can be a pompous dick sometimes which I hate. But when I hear people ranting and judging people without any knowledge or experience behind it I just want to scratch my face off. The phrase “I’m not being funny but ...” tends to be used a lot, along with glaring social stereotypes and things they read about in The Sun that definitely happened.

Fat days

Nothing fits, I’m fat, I can’t believe I have to live through this day as such an obese pile of poo. How can I go out in public? My legs look like trees. I’m going to sit on the edge of my bed frowning and slouching in a pile of toddler misery. You get the idea.

Guys making a joke/comment about my outfit

Agh, you know NOTHING about clothes so shut the fuck up. Where does that get you, at all? It’s like correcting people’s spelling and grammar; I used to do it until I thought “why do I do that?” It's not funny. It doesn’t get me anywhere and it just annoys people.

Depressing hangovers

It hits you a moment before you wake up. Your stomach sinks. It’s sort of like a realisation that you’re alive. I’m not sure what causes it but it must be the dream like state of being drunk, that sort of morphs into slumber and then you wake up sober all of a sudden. You feel sad about everything. It’s pretty fun to just go out and be adventurous, but there are nights when it’s shit and this is the product of that.

Realising how wrong you were about someone

Liking fashion has got me nowhere; most of the people that seemed cool to me have turned out to be the worst people I’ve ever met. I liken this to looking at your pores with a magnetic mirror at 8 in the morning; you just shouldn’t do it. You’re revealing the stark reality of something that you would much rather just keep at a distance. You think this guy is so cool and you love his hair and oh my good look how sexy he is with a cigarette, and then he tells you how much he loves Linkin’ Park and calls your friend a dick. Kind of a bummer. Let the pretty people be pretty; look, don’t touch.

t the moment I'm quite enjoying trying on clothes with little intention of actually buying them. In H&M today I thought I'd give this whole 'full length' skirt trend a go, just to see how much of a nun/tramp I looked. Annoyingly I quite liked it.

oday I went to look at clothes for the first time in ages; shopping is just torture when you have no money, and I completely object to the idea of "window shopping". I hit Topshop, just for the thrills, only to be disapointed (I try and convince myself I don't like any of the "overpriced tat" so it's easier on my soul). Shockingly Next had some really nice cutesy stuff, but let's face it .. it's Next, come on. H&M is a no go in my town. Then Zara. Lovely lovely Zara. I would live in that shop if they wouldn't keep throwing me out. Saw some fun things, and now thanks to their NEW ONLINE SHOP I can continue the torutre by looking at them on the internet daily. I found most things apart from one wonderfully cute furry leopard print bag that I nearly stroked my face against.

Notting Hill Carnival is far too manic to take a big old distracting/very breakable camera to, so here are a couple of terribly good quality phone pics. And a fun remix of a song I heard about 12 hundred times on that Monday.

If you've ever been in a riot or Oxford Street on Christmas Eve or a Tesco at 22.59 outside any AA meeting; carnival is something approaching that kind of number of people. You can feel the music as soon as you get out of the tube, literally, it's like if thunder had an African rhythm. The atmosphere is just "good time"; everyone's drinking, eating, dancing, plus some shouting (saw a girl get dropped on her arse, but she was punching the guy in the face so I don't really blame him much for letting go). Yeah, carnival is lots and lots and lots of fun. I advise anyone who wants to see millions of people have an amzing time celebrating their Reggae Reggae roots (eh eh?) while getting pretty daaaarn drunk and high, to definitely GO; put it on your "things to do in life" list, which I know you all have.

I had an interesting adventure tonight. Hauled to Maidstone to body paint for a Lady GaGa event only to realise we'd been double booked with some other yahoos.

Feeling like tits with now defunct lightning bolt make up and empty pockets, we headed back for Rosé wine and those Tesco doritos with the fat mexican on the front.

It's ok cos my face was fierce the whole night. You can't be disappointed when you have electricity coming out of your eyeball.

After endless bored hours absently gazing at the footage looped on Fashion TV, not only did I lose faith in that guy with a yacht who owns the channel, but in South African fashion designers. It's not as if I even extensively researched Cape Town fashion week, but just sort of palmed it off as primitive and incompetent, as one tends to do with some things in South Africa.

How mistaken I was. If I had actually done my research I would have realised the country is filled with talented designers brimming with ways to visually express the beauty of the African landscape and the peace it instills in you.

Without further ado I bring you the first of these discoveries; Coppelia. A nice touch is also the shades, all by Ray Ban, which make me think about the warmth and beauty of the Cape Town landscape. I obviously have to express that this is not how I think the designer has intended it, or how anyone else should percieve it. It's just the feeling the collection personally gives me and the relation it has to my own memories and experiences. But isn't that the best thing about art?

I am also aware of my little African tangent I've been going on lately, I will get back to the UK (earth) soon, and all the goodness it contains.

Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History: Very catchy; download if you just want to dance and can't be bothered to actually "get into" the album.
Marina & The Diamonds - The Family Jewels: Also very catchy; every single song you can sing and dance to immediately. She also has lyrics that make you pump your fist and say "yeah".
Miike Snow - Miike Snow: Just nice music.
The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Chromatorium: Noisy, quick, all over the place. If bad sex could be music, this is what it would sound like. Just kidding. Actual good music rather than just catchy, and I love the guy's voice.
Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II: They heavily influenced Nirvana. Sort of grungy sort of punky, the guy can't sing, but overall really good.

So what's been happening in my life ... not a whole lot really. My only interesting fact is I now own (kind of) my own house in North London. Swanky eh. And recently (the past few days) I really like the sixties. In a face way. As in I like the faces in the sixties. Like Edie. Edie Sedgwick. We in the UK had Twiggy, the USA had Edie. She was all bizarre and interesting but in a mundane way. But man was she fucked up. You have to be fucked up for people to be interested in you I think. It adds a certain ... je ne se quois. Well Andy Warhol was interested in her ... for a time anyway.

This is part of Andy Warhol's film, in which she stars. It's not so much a film as just film of her. It gets strangely hypnotic considering it's just some bird putting clothes on and talking about jack all.

And this is just a good video of how to recreate her make-up, which I have secretely been doing. Hitting the town in this get up would probably end up in all manner of abuse. I predict. LET'S TEST IT OUT.

Reading Lesley Arfin's work is kind of like reading the horoscopes. You can relate to every single thing she says, and even if it's a vague one liner about destiny, you feel like she's talking specifically about you.

Reading her book you'll discover she's a person who's been to hell and back and tried her hand at numerous professions, but been loyal to her friends and what she wants the whole way through it. She is my ultimate idol.

Par example, a piece of advice centering around cheating and a hand job:

Sometimes the right decision feels like it’s wrong or bad because we’re hurting someone else. But we have to hurt other people sometimes in order to save ourselves. If you don’t save yourself first, you can’t save anyone at all. You can explore and make new memories anywhere, whether you’re at a crazy music festival or just at the diner. You’ll become the person you want to be not by cheating, lying or giving spontaneous handjobs, but rather by being true to yourself and being honest with what you want. When you want to write/like/do/create something, there's a part of you that always says "everyone's going to think I'm an idiot". You always end up feeling stupid, even if what you created was awesome. Welcome to Self-doubt City. My biggest admiration of Arfin is that she sees that and shows you how to get over it. She becomes the you-in-a-few-years who understands exactly how stupid you are and why you're that stupid.

Leaf through some of her advice, it will apply to anything in your life. And if not, go to her blog or read her book, she's brilliant.

She also dresses super cool but let's not get too obsessed.

Supermarket Jokes

Anyone who works in a supermarket will know the extent of hell you experience while being there. Time drags to lengths you have never experienced. The place is windowless and perpetually lit by a grid of flimsy light fittings above you, row after row. Everything is uniform, repetitive, and the constant fluorescent din leaves you void of any sense of night or day. It’s like Vegas but with ugly people and you can buy soup there.

And the most depressing part: the patrons. A sense of “the customer is always right” morphed and exaggerated in their annoying skulls, they have no worry personally berating any employee they can find, for something usually stemming from their own error. Knowing a man in front of me is a stupid piece of shit, I have many a time smiled at a flurry of abuse centred on my own apparent stupidity.

They creep around the place either smelling like piss or yelling at their 6 kids as if it was their own living room, and the most predictable thing about them is their mathematically repetitive jokes. Every joke seems to be on a slow moving conveyor belt, and like clockwork, customers will tell me the exact same jokes at various times in the day. The phenomenon is the only interesting thing about a supermarket, and I took it upon myself to record them.

"I only came in for one thing."

It’s funny that they make that joke because they’re oblivious to the extent they’re actually being robbed at that very moment. You don’t even need to know anything to figure out that no large company is genuinely interested in giving you cheaper shit. They just want to con you into buying more. “Ooh I’ll have that it’s buy one get one free!”, wake up, you didn’t want it in the first place. You only came in for milk and now you’re spending 20 quid on angel cakes and Muller yoghurt. So ha ha, by the way I’m laughing at you not with you.

"Smile/cheer up!"

Whether I'm in a supermarket or not, I've always hated this, it's insulting. It implies that my face looks shit, and in the mood I get into while stuck in a place with no windows for hours on end, I vehemently take it on as a breach of my human rights to be told to move my face unnecessarily. It also takes up valuable energy I could spend doodling on a receipt, as well as the fact that a weekend job is all about doing as little as you possibly can.

"I thought I'd come to you 'cause you look bored/lonely!"

I am bored, and will be bored whether you’re here or not. Your presence doesn’t figure slightly on my general experience of working here, unless you’re shouting at me. This is interesting because although the customers can subject employees to high levels of anguish, the unpleasantness of sitting behind a till for hours on end is not altered slightly by the presence of anyone else. The routine becomes so deeply engrained and automatic, that you’re basically having a nap for 4 hours. Except it’s a nap where someone is shining bright light in your eyes and moving your arms around against your will.

"I'd like help carrying them home/paying for them!"

This is usually said to me after I’ve offered help with packing their bags. I always have to pretend I’ve never heard the sheer hilarity of it before. But no, dear customer, I don’t do that and that joke isn’t funny.

"Of course I don't need help, I'm not that old/only bought a few things!"

This is another common quip delivered shortly after offering bag packing. It is generally a waste of energy because it is annoyingly ignorant of them to assume I’m asking because I actually think they need help. My dear, I don’t even look at your face, I’m just reading a script.

"Thanks/see you later ANNA!" (Sometimes followed by a wink.)

Oh you’re clever aren’t you, you took the time to look at my name badge then wittily used it as you leave. I’m bowled over. Especially if you’re a middle aged man and all you’re buying is vodka and tampons for your wife (yeah, these men still creep on me).

"Not got long left!"

This is a sweet remark usually made by old people. But I don’t think they understand that it makes no difference how long I have left, every second is as excruciating as the last. A supermarket is the only place I’ve been in my life where it doesn’t matter if you only have ten minutes left, it’s still horrible.

"These machines are fucking rubbish!" (Self scan)

They’re not rubbish, in fact their biggest flaw is that they’re designed so precisely to negate human error, that they give alerts every single time YOU do something wrong. Which winds you up and makes you shout at me. The machine is perfectly fine, you’re the idiot.

Another fun thing about this is that they tell me they’re just going to go to Tescos. Please, if I can ask you one thing, if I was dying and I only had one last request, it would be that you PLEASE, I BEG OF YOU, just DON’T go to Tesco instead of here! No please, wait! I’ll do anything! Noo!

I can't believe how good my job is, really it's the most awesome place I've ever worked. Not only do I have to wear ugly trousers and a green apron, but I also have to smile while getting verbal abuse from turd stinking morons. The main reason I rented this film was for the imagery ... which is exactlyyyy what I got. The costume is totally relentless. Scene after scene of unbelievable 1930s finery; the main proprietor of the eye-candy being the villainous Miss G, who slowly cracks as the film moves on. Bonus clever points if you spot the shift of her strength following the shift of her wardrobe.

The story is sinfully evil too, feeding your imagination just as much as your eyes. Watch it. Cracks.

i feel like a total psychopath. not myself and completely emotionless. enough to necessitate a "dear diary" esque blog post. what is this? sooo strange. i feel like telling the people i hate that they lose at life even though they don't. as well as the people i love. summarises my mood pretty conclusively.

i HATE people. i bottle that up so much in my everday life, i go to huge lengths to hide how much i crushingly hate everyone. it's completely unjustified and unfair so i think i'm just not a very nice person. but it's comforting to admit it, it gets tiring pretending to be submissive instead of bitter and angry.

i need to finish cleaning my room. i'm gonna find some nice pictures to put with this so its not a waste. btw nice cat dress katy, flip!!
