Today I spent £8 to go and see the Anish Kapoor exhibition at the Royal Academy. The £8 was a bit steep for a student price, but I reluctantly handed over my food money for half the week anyway. But I can tell you now, it was worth it. This stuff is good. Not in a bollocky artsy appreciation way, it's just good. It's interactive (not as much as I'd like) and not your usual pretentious modern art stuff (unless you read the leaflet, then it gets abit poncey). My camera is at home, so these photos are curtesy of the Royal Academy website and google images. This was the taster bit outside the gallery. If you stand right below it and look up it really looks like the thing is moving. Fucking clouds being so deceptive. Nice seeing yourself from so many different angles too. Thats the cool mirror room where you can see what you'd look like if you were in a Tim Burton film (REALLY THIN) or if you were in some sort of warped, space/time mishap. TIP: running at the mirrors multiplies the fun tenfold, but annoys the guards. This room was full of a lot of strange squiggly cement things. Looked a bit like wet sand or toothpaste. Not my thing but was well recieved by others. YES that IS a massive block of wax being pushed through the wall. You saw it here first. TIP 2: don't touch the wax, it's not as nice as it looks. This also annoys the gurads, but if you do it when they're not looking it's fine. Didn't realise at the time how much this looks like a vage. I stood right inside there as well, thanks for that Anish. This was actually my favourite piece. It's alot bigger than that man makes it look. I like to feel inadequate and small compared to art work, so this got extra points. The red shiny stuff looked like a fancy toilet seat cover. Apparantly this has "obvious" sexual connotations, but nothing compared to that fanny before. This was an eye fuck. That's a big hole in the wall, but it looks fake, but it's not, but you're eyes think its just shadow .... yeah.
This was the finale. You wait around for 20 odd minutes, then a guy in a boiler suit comes and loads a big block of red wax into the cannon, stands around building up the tension for a couple of minutes, then fires the wax at that wall, then goes and sits back down again. I like stuff like that.
All in all this gets 2 thumbs up and 8.5/10. Seeing your childhood memories of Babybel wax being shoved through walls is a nice feeling, although I was concerned about who was going to clean it up. That wax fucking stains.
Anna, your (lovely) bum is the reason this blog exists, show its delightful self off more often yeah. And I doubt I'd get very far with these beauties. Shame.
1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs Live 29th November : a major excitement this month and the event bringing all recent emotional rollercoaster rides to equilibrium.
2. Canterbury architecture : A subject eating up most of my time in the week. Learning to be an architect in a cathedral city is FUN(repetitive).
3. "Fuck off" : what I would love to be able to say more.
4. "Haha" : for when fuck off gets tiring.
5. The morning after feeling : defined by the above facial expressions. In fact I don't recall the last morning after where my general mood wasn't exactly as above. Apart from that time at Sians where we got wrapped up and went charity shop shopping, that was good.
6. My arse : it gives me enough grief, I might as well put it in my blog somewhere.
7. Friend on photographic fire : because it's a good picture, she's my blogging comrade and I'm jealous of how good she is at chatting up boys.
By the way regular readers and/or fans (you exist don't you?), I love you.
I think Halloween is officially my third favourite time of year, it's my favourite "festival" (or whatever, blah) by any means. I don't really know or care about the story behind it, all I know is it's fucking great to mash a load of fake blood onto your face and get slaughtered (ehh get it?!) with your pally pals. Now, I know fancy dress isn't everyones cup of tea, but it IS mine, and I take it with milk and 2 sugars tar. Whether you go the whole hog and come in some elaborate costume that took 7 hours and the help of your entire family and street and neighbouring town to attach to you, or you just stick on a hairy mask and go BOO, I have equal respect. It's all in the game, and if you play it, then you'll know how good it is. Here are some snaps of the 2009 halloween adventures, ranging from distant Margate, to Canterbury Cathedral City/home, to some place in London. Enjoy, you bunch of paganistic bastards ... (please don't correct me on my inaccurate historical knowledge of halloween)
And some inspirational photos from an American Apparel party that looks decidedly cooler than anything I could come up with (via Platform)
... and the venue was my bedroom and the audience was me and my friends and the only fundamental rule about DJing was that you have to be sort of clumsy and not blend anything together very well, then THIS is what I would play.
The whole geometry thing is cool but I also like the angle these pictures are all taken from. I feel like I'm stalking them or invading their privacy, which is only true no? I like how they show the way the people hold themselves.
A person can't fake the way they hold themself like they can with a heavily rehearsed shot of their silly mug.
Hey little guy, ever wondered how to make yourself generally a cooler person? Follow these guidlines I've kindly laid out for myself, and adapt them to yourself.
1. Listen to people.
2. Don't be lazy.
3. Don't talk shit about friends. Don't be friends with people you talk shit about.
4. When you know you shouldn't be doing something, don't fucking do it.
5. Don't be tempted by cheap thrills.
6. Think positive (no really, it works).
7. Read.
8. Be high maintenance (pluck/wax/trim/moisturise ... when was being a slob ever good, for anyone?).
9. Be productive.
10. Don't be FLAKY.
11. Remember your manners.
12. Don't give up, you're not the same person once you've given up.
13. Take a chill pill. Neuroticism is never hot ... plus, act like you don't care and you won't. \self preservation you noob :-)
